Through two purpose-built hospital ships staffed by volunteer medical professionals from around the world, Mercy Ships provides free, life-changing surgeries to children and adults across sub-Saharan Africa who would otherwise have little or no access to safe surgical care. Their mission is built on the belief that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of where they live or their financial circumstances.
For more than four decades, Mercy Ships has delivered hope to communities where surgical care is often unavailable or inaccessible. Patients suffering from conditions such as cleft lip and palate, cataracts, burns, tumours, orthopaedic conditions, and other treatable illnesses receive expert medical care at no cost. For many, these procedures are truly life changing, restoring health, independence, confidence, and the opportunity to live a fuller life.
But Mercy Ships’ impact extends far beyond the operating room. Alongside providing free surgeries, the organisation partners with local governments, hospitals, and healthcare professionals to strengthen medical systems from within. Through education, mentoring, and specialised training, local surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists, biomedical technicians, and other healthcare workers gain valuable skills that continue benefiting their communities long after the hospital ship departs. This sustainable approach creates lasting improvements in healthcare for generations to come.
